Twin Mattress Cover

A twin mattress cover serves a few good purposes and is important to the longevity of your mattress. It should not be confused with a twin mattress pad or “topper” as they are often called. Covers are to protect your mattress from spills, physical accidents and keep the ticking in like-new condition.

There are mattress covers for every need, made of various materials in different thicknesses and ease of application. If you have a toddler or young child, you will probably want to get a waterproof cover. These used to be uncomfortable and stiff but with all the advances in modern materials, this is no longer the case. Hard plastic has given way to soft weaves that repel liquids and dirt that might seep through the bottom sheet. They are a real advantage when a child is ill and bedridden or isn’t completely potty trained.

Waterproof covers are also good for people who tend to “run hot” and sweat at night, especially in the winter when the air can dry and hot inside your home. You can get a basic plastic cover with a zipper on the end to encase the entire mattress or one with elastic sides that slips on like a fitted bottom sheet. Many of today’s waterproof covers are also quilted for added comfort.

The type of twin mattress cover could also be for comfort rather than utility. If your needs have changed since you got your mattress, adding a cover can save the expense of buying a new mattress by adjusting the firmness to your taste. The firm mattress that was so comfortable a couple of years ago might just be causing undue pressure on your joints that cause you to awaken at night from pain or pressure. A twin mattress cover that has enough padding will relieve those “hot spots” that can irritate your body and interrupt your sleep.

If your once soft and luxurious bed has become uncomfortable because you’ve developed issues with your spine, there are covers that can increase the firmness of your bed. Memory foam is very popular but it can be quite expensive depending on the quality of the cover. Be sure to try one out before you buy, as the material has a distinctive odor that may or may not bother you.

Perhaps you’ve developed allergies, as many people do. In this case, you will want a twin mattress cover that is hypoallergenic. These are not costly and will prevent reactions to dust mites and mold spores. You may also want to add a hypoallergenic pillow cover. Hypoallergenic covers also come in padded form if you want to adjust the softness or firmness of your bed while protecting yourself from allergic reactions.

A twin mattress cover can protect your mattress and add years to its life if it is a good quality mattress. Many people find that rather than buying a new mattress and foundation, a good quality cover is just as good as replacing the mattress.
